Teach math to children!!11!!1!1!!

While searching for supplementary information on Google about methods of teaching beginner's mathematics to children, I began to notice a very distressing trend in the results of my searches. Almost every link that came up referred in some way to either online teaching resources, mathematics learning software, math games online, or buying math resource books online. There are "e-teachers" and "e-standards" and "e-thinking" and "invest $30 in your child's future, buy this enhanced CD-ROM to teach your child how to count to 10!!1!1!!!"...and I'm sitting in front of my computer wanting to scream "What the hell happened to counting pebbles and fingers and using numerical flash cards with your kids??" I don't know. I find it supremely ironic that it's through the internet that I'm finding out how much the internet has changed education and, well, our lives in general. Quite a case of snake-biting-its-own-tail, I must say.

Anyway, I am awake too early, because I have to go and teach math to a kid (hence my Google exertions earlier). And I slept far too late. Incidentally, someone asked yesterday, in complete innocence, whether I have consulted anyone about my sleeping disorder. I found this quite funny, seeing as I don't actually have a sleeping disorder, but I can appreciate that people would think this - since my holidays started, I've been sleeping around 2-6am and waking up at 10-2pm. I think I now exist in a completely different timezone from the rest of the Malaysian citizens. Ah well. I'm gone.
