The confused teenager

It's funny how teenagers are seen to be the most vehemently anti-convention/anti-norm groups in society. There's nothing worse than conformity, they cry; there's nothing worse than being just like everybody else. To hell with social norms, let's rebel. Nonetheless, in their desperate bids to become different from everybody else, they ironically become exactly the same as the next person trying to be different from everybody else.

And it's just like two sides of the same coin, really. It's all a bit silly.

To loathe the idea of "social etiquette" while adhering desperately to the idea of "clique etiquette"...to despise the requirements of social courtesy to one's elders while revering the requirements of one's social status in high school...to reject all forms of authority while blindly obeying fashion and social trends...to lay indelible claims to individuality while being just like everybody else...

The confused teenager, indeed.

Note: I suppose I should really say "we" rather than "they". After all, it's not as though I'm not a teenager myself...ah well. People tell me I'm old for my age, anyway.
