A momentary lapse

I found it remarkable when, yesterday, a cursory glance at the papers caught those twin light beams thrust skywards in ghostly defiance. I can hardly believe it's been three years - already three years, when it feels like just last week, perhaps, that I was gaping up at the TV screen in the school library, incredulous, and the word 'terrorism' creeping into redefinition.

Ever the cynic, I find myself wondering whether those beams are lit on anniversaries for that delicious sense of poignance, or because there's really only THIS MUCH electricity we can waste on pathos.

Occasionally, I am crass because, often, I am not.
