i'm not bitter
Dear British Government,
Your appalling attitude towards the hallowed font of knowledge that is the British Library can only be testimony to the fact that none of your MPs have ever used it or been enriched by it. It is otherwise difficult to understand how its true worth could be so splendidly miscalculated. Nevertheless, I hope I speak for many when I say that there are those of us with a better placed sense of value. Please could you give us a monetary estimate of what you believe the nation's history, culture and intellectual output potential is worth, and how this compares to an estimated £8 billion being siphoned off into a set of sports facilities that will very probably become as much of a white elephant as the Millennium Dome after 2012?
I am astounded at your flagrant disregard for scholars of today as well as of future generations, and I maintain that these proposed funding cuts would cripple academic, intellectual, historical, cultural, literary and genealogical scholarship all over Britain. May I suggest that you bulldoze Kew Gardens, Cambridge's Library and the Bodleian while you are at it.
Sincerely,
rAchel
