read Nat's lucid & eloquent statement on his detention. for me, as a historian, it's a pleasure to read something so cogently aware of itself as a historical document. to paraphrase robin @ Snarkmarket (:P), I like Nat's statement a lot because it's a statement in a deeper-than-usual sense -- not just snapshots from a scene, mutely presented, but a smart analysis of a confounding situation -- an attempt not just to describe, but to explain (in other words, the essential difference between history and chronicle). when living in interesting times, as we no doubt do today, that skill is invaluable.
