Oliver

I recently rewatched this after many years, and it's even more adorable than I remembered, although there are some nuances to the film that the naive and younger me never really grasped. I remember being so captivated by this when I first watched it, and there is a part of my brain that remembers ALL THE LYRICS, because I must have watched it that many times. The older, more cynical me finds some parts saccharine, and the dance sequences stupendous but slightly tedious after a while. Bill Sikes' acting is overdone, but Fagin is the consummate star of the whole thing - him, and the kid who plays the Artful Dodger. And Oliver is just so adorable that I just want to spread jam on him and drown him in fluffy cute things.

I missed entirely the historical context of Oliver when I first watched it, naturally; the subtle social commentary, implicit in nearly every song lyric, went completely over my head until this recent rewatching. But it's no less of a timeless classic, and this is one to show the kids, again and again.
